Your overall IELTS band is the average of your four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band (6.25 → 6.5), and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band (6.75 → 7.0). Listening and Reading are first converted from correct answers out of 40 with a published table.

How the overall band is rounded
Four half bands always average to a multiple of 0.125. Here is where each possible average between 6.0 and 7.0 lands. The same pattern repeats for every band.
.25 and .75 sit exactly between two half bands. IELTS rounds both up.

Why General Training Reading needs more correct answers
Both Reading tests use the same 9-band scale. Academic texts can be harder, so General Training usually takes more correct answers for the same band. 30 correct is 7.0 in Academic Reading but 6.0 in General Training.
Lowest mark for each band in the published tables. Academic band 4.0 starts at 10 correct, General Training at 15.
No marks out of 40: four criteria each
Examiners give a band on four criteria. In Speaking the four are weighted equally. In Writing each task is assessed on its own and Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1.

Common questions
How is the IELTS overall band calculated?
Add your four section bands (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), divide by four and round to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.
Does 6.25 round up to 6.5 in IELTS?
Yes. ielts.org gives this exact example: 6.5 + 6.5 + 5.0 + 7.0 = 25, divided by 4 is 6.25, and the overall band is 6.5.
Is 6.75 rounded to 7 in IELTS?
Yes. An average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band, so 7.0 + 7.0 + 6.5 + 6.5 = 27, ÷ 4 = 6.75, gives an overall band of 7.0.
What about an average of 6.125?
It rounds down to 6.0, because 6.125 is nearer to 6.0 than to 6.5. This is ielts.org's third example (6.5, 6.5, 5.5, 6.0). Averages of four half bands can only end in .0, .125, .25, .375, .5, .625, .75 or .875.
What band is 30 out of 40 in IELTS Listening?
7.0. On the published table 30–31 correct answers is band 7.0. The exact marks for a band vary slightly from one test version to another.
What band is 30 out of 40 in Academic Reading?
7.0. In Academic Reading 30–32 correct answers is band 7.0.
What band is 30 out of 40 in General Training Reading?
6.0. In General Training Reading 30–31 correct answers is band 6.0. You need 34 correct answers for 7.0.
Why does General Training Reading need more correct answers?
Both Reading tests are graded on the same 9-band scale, but Academic texts can have harder vocabulary and more complex style. ielts.org says a General Training test usually needs more correct answers for the same band.
Is this calculator official?
No. It uses the tables IDP publishes and the rounding rule from ielts.org. The tables show average marks; the exact marks for a band vary slightly between test versions. Only your Test Report Form is official.
How are IELTS Writing and Speaking scored?
There is no score out of 40. Examiners give a band on four criteria. Writing: Task achievement (Task 1) or Task response (Task 2), Coherence and cohesion, Lexical resource, Grammatical range and accuracy; Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1. Speaking: Fluency and coherence, Lexical resource, Grammatical range and accuracy, Pronunciation, weighted equally.
